New Recruit Information

You probably already know someone in the JFOA, and you are interested in officiating football. So, let’s get right to the need to know information…

New Officials

  • Register to become certified at the MSHSAA website.
  • Wait for your rule book, mechanics book, and case book in the mail.
  • Take your Part 1 MSHSAA exam which is 100 question m/c online, open-book exam.
  • Apply for membership with the JFOA. (First year dues are waived).
  • Attend your first meeting with JFOA and meet with the assignors and other members of the association.
  • You will get setup by us on Arbiter Sports (scheduling software).
  • Receive assignments from all levels of play; accept or decline.
  • There is are two MSHSAA required meetings, one for rules, and one for mechanics, which the JFOA can assist you in completing.
  • Every official has to take a Part 2 exam which is 50 questions m/c online (similar to your Part 1) open-book exam.
  • Purchase your full uniform and equipment needed to officiate.
  • You must attend JFOA training meeting dates.
  • You are required to turn in 5 evaluation forms from the supervisors of crews you have officiated with for your first year.
  • Peewee Football is also coordinated through the JFOA. Learn more details at the JFOA meetings.

Relax, sit back, and study your rules. RULE TWO is a great place to start, as it goes over the definitions of all significant areas addressed in the many situations of football. Your mechanic’s book will describe where you should be looking and paying attention to during different types of plays (ie. run or pass, free kick, scrimmage kick, goal line, etc. When reviewing the books, watch the videos to get a look at exactly what you may be seeing on the field.

Uniforms

All officials are expected to have neat, clean, pressed uniforms, with belt and clean shoes.

Take your time to watch all of the videos posted. Review them as many times as you need to.

Meetings

Training Meetings are required. Great Information to start off on the right foot.

Alterations for Uniforms

Sewing Sisters in Carthage. Need your pants hemmed, patches sewn on, or anything brought in; they will take care of you.

Arbiter Sports

JFOA Assignors and members utilize Arbiter Sports to schedule and assign your games. This is accessible by website and by an APP you can download after the JFOA sends you an email with login information.
